This volume includes works for cello and piano – Alwyn’s Three Negro Spirituals and Carwithen’s Sonatina. These recreational pieces are suitable for players at an intermediate level while the Sonatina is a concert work for players at a more advanced level.

One of the most prolific British composers of the 20th century, William Alwyn (1905-85) produced almost three hundred compositions in most genres: opera, ballet, orchestral, chamber, instrumental and song. Additionally, he contributed around 200 scores for the cinema and was a noted flautist and teacher.

Doreen Carwithen (1922-2003) was a British composer of classical and film music who quickly rose in prominence in the male-dominated post-WWII film world. Her music has seen a resurgence of interest in recent years and her output includes a piano concerto, short orchestral works, two string quartets, vocal and solo instrumental works, and about 30 film scores.
