The score and parts to John Woolrich’s String Trio

John Woolrich’s 1996 String Trio reflects his craft as a miniaturist. The 6-minute piece is made up of five finely-wrought movements, each with its own tightly-focused expressivity. The opening movement, ‘Saying its good-nights’, places violin and cello in their highest registers, while the viola turns a simple melody. ‘Tableaux vivant’ follows, lasting barely 30 seconds, with a sudden explosion of activity in the violin. ‘Into the desert’ has hushed, faltering gestures in the violin above a treading melodic underlay from viola and cello; in the ensuing ‘Aria’ the viola breaks into soulful song. ‘Les Adieux’ offers a fleet-footed, ethereal conclusion. The product comprises the score and parts.
