On Saturday 18 October BBC Radio Three’s Music Matters featured a fascinating discussion between Colin and David Matthews as part of its “Just the Two of Us” strand. The conversation, which touches on their early forays into composing, working with Britten and their healthy sibling rivalry, is available to listen again online here.

Whilst the brothers have pursued two very different artistic paths, a shared love and mastery of the orchestra unites them. David recounts being ‘incredibly impressed’ by his younger brother's breakthrough Fourth Sonata though singled out Colin's recent work as the strongest - showcasing, in his words, an ‘extraordinary ability to produce extremely subtle sounds’. For Colin, David’s orchestral works In the Dark Time and Chaconne stand out, as does the Twelfth Quartet which he described as 'an absolute masterpiece'.
